karibu mpenzi

After graduation from college (nearly 5 years ago!), I ventured to Tanzania with my dear rafiki, Ms. Sweet, for nearly four months. We volunteered and lived at Msalato Theological College in Dodoma, the parliamentary capital of the country, in the library and computer labs. We traveled to Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, as well as the island of Zanzibar during our time abroad. We explored the country's wild-life preserves, were welcomed into the homes of amazing Tanzanian families and churches, and into the ex-pat community.

I hold a special place in my heart for my time in Tanzania. While my friends and family didn't understand my going at the time, it truly was an invaluable time in my life. Sure I was desperately home-sick as an immature recent college grad, but looking back I gained so much more than I can imagine from the people I encountered, the relationships I made, the experiences I had, and most importantly getting to know myself a little bit better. I learned the importance of quite, good conversation, a relationship with God and your community as a whole.

If you have the opportunity to go to Africa, whether it's Tanzania or another of the continent's fascinating lands, GO. Do not hesitate. Pack your bag, and run for the airport as fast as you possibly can. I hope to get back to Tanzania as soon as we can get things planned and money saved - it's truly a unique and special place & I am blessed to have felt its soil under my feet.
