500 days of summer

I was reminded yesterday by my friends that the movie 500 Days of Summer was based in downtown LA, and as I walked around the city couldn't get the scene below out of my mind. Since West Hollywood is most commonly the setting for movies and TV shows that take place in LA, 500 Days of Summer brought a whole new light to Los Angeles that has helped to bring Downtown back to LA.

On another note, Zoe Deschanel's vintage inspired dresses in the film make me swoon, plus the fact that she wears blue almost throughout the whole movie - my favorite color. She makes the whole lady-like look seem so effortless and makes me want to dig in at my nearest vintage store to find frocks like hers.

I'm in LA this week for work, and got here yesterday before the rest of my team, so I did a little exploring Downtown, a little visiting with friends, oh and I treated myself to a massage...ahhh. Here are some iPhone snapshots from my afternoon adventures.

this was a new way to spell my name I've not seen before

met up with some pals and visited Wurstkuche sausage grill in the Arts District

we took pictures with the street art

I got a little lost, downtown - totally worth it

I rode this bad boy for $0.50 to the top of the Pershing Square

henkel harris

On Saturday morning, we visited the Henkel Harris furniture factory warehouse sale in Winchester, and let me tell you - beautiful doesn't begin to describe the pieces of furniture they had for sale. The team at the warehouse explained to us that they have 3 people who hand carve every detail on each piece of furniture, the china cabinets have humidity control and dimming lights(!), and the chairs and couches are eight-way hand tied + every piece is made in the Winchester factory - no shipping of pieces from overseas! Unfortunately, despite it being a warehouse sale, the prices were beyond our budget (i.e. $10,000 for a table), but I did snap a few photos of some of their wonderfully handcrafted furniture to share with all of you!

a house becoming a home

So I've been busy hustling between the city for work and back home at night, and now I'm on the road traveling for the next two weeks for work; sadly I've let the blog fall to the wayside. BUT, at the beckoning of my friend, Ms. Smith, I wanted to share a few pictures of the progress we've made on our new digs. Enjoy!

Our friends in Arlington helped us pack up the truck...

and off we went down the road to our new home....

Our new grill was delivered....

Our neighbors brought us flowers for our deck...

My fave Mom-in-law gave me a rug for my office...

Mr. S put up his college flag...

Mr. S and Dad updated the kitchen lighting...

We got a new washer and dryer...

Mr. S put up new numbers on the house...

...ta-da our house is becoming our home!!!

how to frame art for your home

I've posted before about being on the hunt for some wonderful pieces of art for our new house. This past weekend while browsing the awesome website, 20 x 200, I found this really helpful video about how to frame your artwork. I will certainly be using their helpful tip of putting art in simple frames that are bigger than the piece. I hope you find this video useful too!

new house necessities

Whelp, it's moving day - well out of the condo that is. Yep, we're moving mid-week. I may be asking to be committed to the looney bin by Friday, but let's be honest, we've conquered much tougher tasks before, and we're only technically moving a living room and bedroom worth of furniture.

The new house has a whopping 2,900 sq feet of living space to furnish with 4 bedrooms, an office, living room, study, dining room, kitchen, 4 bathrooms and a finished basement, so I've got LOTS to buy to make the house become a home. Below are a few items that are on my list that I am coveting to add to the new house. A few are dream items, like the Jonathan Adler bench at a cool $1,600 (!), and others are items I have already ordered, like the Home Depot outdoor sconces for $50 each. I really want to purchase sturdy, neutral pieces of furniture with pops of color and pattern in the lamp shades, art, occasional tables, pillows, etc. throughout the house. Any other items I should consider for the house?

bar cart styling

I love a beautiful bar cart. We have more than our share of wine glasses, decanters, shakers, stirrers, napkins, ice buckets, tongs...well, you get the gist. I hope to have a lovely spot in our home like these inspiring bar carts.

kaftan monday

I think there's nothing more splendid for summer than a kaftan. I'm feeling like I'd rather throw one on today than work clothes. Why can't business casual include a clause for island style in during the summer so I could wear a comfy kaftan to the office? Simply put, it's a kaftan kind of day.

airport chic

I've been traveling for work this week, and as I am getting ready to head to the airport this morning, I am working on carefully choosing my outfit. When we were kids my mom always made sure when we traveled we looked nice - matching dresses, perfect little hair bows & frilly socks to match. She instilled a sense that it was always important to be presentable at times when you never quite knew who you'd run into, and even more importantly, to look nice for the people you were seeing when you arrived at your destination.

I know I've written about being dressed for the airport and my traveling essentials before here, but today's post is in honor of those who pull off airport chic effortlessly & flawlessly. Bravo!!
