sweet home

I posted back in March how much I admire Old Try, and their terrific prints. So once, we moved into our new home, I settled on one for our house after much debate, and found it a perfect place to live yesterday.

First thing's first - the packaging - while it was delivered in a simple poster tube, it was outfitted with a great Southern thanks sticker, which is a first clue that these guys have been taught their manners.

The packing slip, which was signed by Micah (nice touch guys!), had wonderful type and even had a great stamp that made my heart dance.

My print came delivered perfectly on heavy stock with the colors so vibrant I could hardly stand it, and better yet, it was embossed with their logo and numbered 75 of 100 in the series. I chose the print of the Alabama State flag with "Sweet Home" in the crosses as a nod to our new home, and where I hang my school allegiance proudly.

As soon as I could, I dashed off to our local frame shop to have my print custom framed behind crisp museum glass. I picked it up yesterday after two anxious weeks, and found this little beauty a home at the top of our stairs so we can see it every time we come up, and being reminded of the song "Sweet Home Alabama" doesn't hurt either. (Roll Tide Roll!!!) I must say it makes my heart smile each time I see this new addition to our house. Thanks Old Try for keeping the South proud and for capturing our individual heritage so perfectly!! Sweet Home Alabama, indeed.

(Many thanks to my adorable models who helped make this shot possible. Jack's furry friend is Tessa, my parent's shih-poo, who's visiting while they are in Europe for a few weeks.)

hmb's beach bag essentials

Hi everyone! I'm Heather from Pineapples and Pearls. I was so excited when Lacy asked me to guest post on her blog!

It seems that this year more and more people are taking their beach vacations later in the summer (maybe that's what happens when we get older?!) so I thought it was fitting to do a post on my top ten Beach Bag Essentials as people plan their August and Labor Day weekend beach trips.
Beach Bag Essentials

1. J.Crew Swimsuit - I love J.Crew's bathing suits. They come in every style you can think of and a million colors and they last. I bought a navy one piece this past year and I love it. I wouldn't have thought that strapless would work for me but it's so nice not to think about tan lines. It's a classic swimsuit that I know I'll wear for years.

2. L.L.Bean Boat and Tote Bag - It's been around forever and it's indestructible. I've been using the same one since third year of college. It has functioned as a book bag, overnight bag, and beach bag and it's still going strong. Don't forget to monogram it!

 3. Rainbows - I know they're leather and they're not meant for the beach but really that water and sand stained patina just makes them look well loved!

 4. Aveeno Mineral Sunblock SPF 30 and Burt's Bee's - Because you don't want to get burned. Plus, this Aveeno sunblock is perfect for sensitive skin.

 5. Tervis Tumbler with Top - The best way to carry a drink out on to the beach. It keeps drinks cold and the top stops sand from getting in!

 6. Beach Chair - Nothing beats sitting with your feet in the surf reading a magazine. This one's great because it's got a place for your drink and keeps you up out of the water.

 7. Beach Towel - I desperately need a new beach towel and this one is perfect! Navy and white is classic yet fresh.

 8. Baseball Hat - I'm never caught without a hat on the beach. You don't want to cause any unnecessary premature wrinkles!

 9. Big Sunglasses - Don't spend the day squinting, just put on some big sunglasses. You'll look mysterious and save your eyes.

 10. Book - Nothing beats an Emily Giffin novel on the beach. Thanks Lacy for letting me guest post on your blog! Hope y'all enjoy my Beach Bag essentials!

be our guest

We have a house full of guests this weekend in town for a friend's wedding, and I was thinking of some clever ideas to bring spice to the 'ole guest bedroom and found some great ideas, but I didn't actually execute any of them. (cough, slacker, cough) Let's just say all I got to putting in the room was a few pictures, fresh sheets and a bouquet of flowers - oh well, here are some neat ideas for next time around!

perfect for the day-after the fun...

wise words for wednesday

I'm traveling for work this week, and while I'm out of town guests will be arriving for a friend's wedding in town this weekend. In the midst of packing I felt like I needed to scrub toilets, finish laundry, vacuum, and everything else at the house. Alas, around 9 PM Monday night I realized that really, no one will care if there's dirty laundry in the hamper, or if my office desk has stacks of papers, or if there's a few dust bunny or two in the corners, because...

designing guest rooms

I've been trying to explain to Mr. S my ideas for our extra bedrooms in the new house, but to much avail telling him I want mint and coral bedding or a kelly green chair doesn't exactly translate like seeing a picture of it. So I wanted to share with you all a few ideas I have for our guest rooms. Several items in these items we have, like beds, the dresser, the curtains and marble top side table, but other items I'll need to buy or maybe DIY.

Do you have any ideas for these rooms or items that might work in these spaces?

coke classic

Yesterday on my favorite show, CBS Sunday Morning, there was a feature segment about the all-American classic drink, Coke.  I remember as a kid going to my grandmother's beauty shop and paying $0.50 for a glass bottle of coke and sipping it with peanut butter crackers listening to my grandmother and her customers chat on the latest neighborhood gossip (Think Steel Magnolia's beauty shop - yes, attached to the house!).

To this day, if there's a bottle of Coke on the menu I'm drinking. I'm not drinking it because I love the taste of Coke, but simply because it reminds me of careless summer days when I was a kid in Georgia. What reminds you of summers as a kid?

little secrets

This week I've been falling more and more in love with Passion Pit. They keep popping up on Pandora, and every one of their songs makes me want to dance around the office.

Here's some Passion Pit for your enjoyment to kick your weekend off with a bang. And many thanks to Ms. Citrenbaum for introducing me to them - I owe you one! Trust my friends, I've been rockin' my mint hues while rocking out too!

mint for the office

I was thinking yesterday as I slipped on my coral cardigan (I have too many of these things) how I could work in some mint into my work attire...look no further my friends! This outfit pairs a simple white dress, and a wonderfully cut Jackie-O style jacket to top off the look - perfection.

wise words for wednesday

It's been a while since I posted a wise words for wednesday post...so here it is today folks! I hope you find inspiration from the ultimate heroine - Nora Ephron.

mint & coral

I told y'all yesterday about my love affair this summer with mint - I can't help it. After some consisderation, and walking by each day loathing the blinding yellow walls of one of our guests rooms, I've decided on the room's new color scheme - mint and coral.

Matchbook Magazine's July issue introduced me to designer, Caitlin Wilson's coral and mint scheme bedroom and textiles (she's a genius!), and Joss and Main's current sale certainly helped sway my decision, and the orangey-pink accessories in their sale this week tipped the scales for me.

These are a few rooms that are inspiring me this week...now I'm on the hunt for the perfect paint color to get this room's new look jump started. Any suggestions?

I've not had much vacation this summer (uh...none at all), but we're off to the lake this weekend with my folks to check out the new boat to relax and unwind...

vintage ice cream

Last night we ventured with some of our friends to a staple here in town, Pack's Frozen Custard. I of course got my old stand-by vanilla with rainbow sprinkles...yumm! So, in light of the recent rise in temps this summer, today is a salute to the old fashion summer treat!! What's your favorite flavor?
