I've got a weekend to myself and a few birthday giftcards just burning a hole in my pocket. Here's what I'm craving now to add to my shopping cart this weekend.

I debated sharing a bunch of pictures from my birthday weekend and all the stories of my party, our day on the boat and then a cook-out on memorial day with our friends (& veterans), but really I think this video tells you just about everything you need to know about how I celebrated my 28th birthday with a giant piñata. Hopefully this gets you through your Thursday with a laugh or two!

my 28th year

Today's my 28th birthday...hooray! Mr. S did an awesome job throwing my a luau themed party this weekend that was off the hook! I am trying to get the pictures in from our friends to share - I was doing too much partying to snap any photos! I'll be back tomorrow with a birthday weekend recap!

bling bling

My newest partner, JoJo Loves You, is an adorable jewelry boutique based in Boston, and I am so excited to share with you that they are having a HUGE sale on their Bling earrings this weekend (Friday - Monday) only! Don't miss out - these earrings great for EVERY occasion - check-out how I wore them, below.

They recently sent me a pair of Glacier Blue Bling earrings that I wore last weekend a bridal shower for one of my favorite friends, Ms. Tucker (soon to be Mrs. Bush!). Since the earrings change colors from a rich teal-green to blue depending upon the light and angle, I paired them with a new kelly green bauble necklace and my favorite Navy dress. They are the perfect size - just big enough to catch the light and compliments, but subtle enough that they didn't over power the outfit - perfect for me!

(sorry for the awkward selfie!)

Okay - so don't miss out on this awesome deal from JoJo Loves You! Get your Bling earrings on sale this weekend only  and while you're there check out their other beautiful jewels - just in time for wedding season!!

wise words for wednesday

I was bored at work yesterday, until I found this. Yep, I was being a boring person. Cheers to not being boring this sweltering Wednesday!!

Yesterday while reading, I came across the story of Zach Sobiech who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 18. While death isn't something out of the ordinary in life, the way he chose to deal with his illness and say goodbye with his song, Clouds, is extraordinary. In the wake of the tragedy in Oklahoma yesterday, and the loss of Zach's precious life, take a few minutes today and watch this video - grab a tissue - and be thankful we have today.

red ink

Last night at Old Navy, the lady in front of me was checking out, and while I waited I got really irritated with her as she wrote a check for her purchases. She didn't take any longer than normal and wasn't making a scene, so what was my beef? She was writing her check with a red ink pen. I hate red ink.

I was bad, actually terrible, at math when I was in school. All through elementary, middle, high school and even college I struggled with math and had weekly tutoring sessions. It felt like every homework, quiz or test I turned in came back to me covered in red ink - bad grades, x's, circles around wrong steps or answers. And of course, with those papers came self-confidence that tanked as soon as I saw those papers. I hate red ink.

Now, I realize how this sounds, but nothing good in my life has ever come written in red ink, with the exception of a Valentine's Day card which typically comes on fun colorful paper, so I make an exception there. Even when I was an editor in college I avoided red like the plague - just because there's a mistake or an edit that should be made, it doesn't mean it needs to scream at someone that they're wrong. Now that I work on teams, and when I've lead people at work, I don't even touch a red pen when reviewing projects or even sharing feedback. There are studies that show that red ink immediately puts people on the defensive - read more here. Nothing constructive comes from a piece of paper covered in red ink or teammates feeling they're having to defend their work or feeling negative about your feedback.

My Dad's former boss and mentor has only ever written in green ink. Once I asked him why he did this, and in his thick German accent he told me that no one's feelings were ever hurt by seeing green ink on a piece of paper, even if that message wasn't a positive one. I concur.

At the risk of sounding like some kum-by-ya yahoo, am I the only who's really bothered by seeing red ink anywhere but in a Christmas card? I say we abolish red ink in schools, at work and for anything that remotely has a negative sentiment attached to it. Let's make red ink a positive thing for us all, like pretty red monograms or a "just because" note written in red ink. Who's with me?!

wise words for wednesday

I'm a dweller. I'll stew on something like a big decision, a conversation or an incident, and think about it 20-ways from Sunday before I force myself to let it go. It's not healthy. I'll keep myself awake for hours thinking about different approaches, arguing with myself (not out loud, I swear!), different perspectives...but it's exhausting. But then again, I guess it's because these things are just so dang heavy.

congrats grads (and moms & dads)

My sister, Hannah, graduated from college this weekend, and I could not have been more proud of her than the very moment she walked across that stage on Saturday to accept her diploma. She's worked so very hard from high school graduation to Outstanding Senior Nominee...Way to go Hannah!

Not to mention, it was my Mom's birthday that same day - talk about an awesome birthday gift!

Hannah's adorable beau, Dustin and his parents helped us celebrate this awesome day as well...

And here's the whole family - it was a wonderful weekend of celebration of achievement, birthdays, oh yeah, and Mother's Day too!

wise words for wednesday

I'm attending an in-depth supervisor development training this week for work. And this quote came out of yesterday's training, and I couldn't help but think about how true it is across all facets of our lives, not just at the office.

Last week, I had an amazing conversation/experience with my favorite manager-now friend, Heather from Fiery & Opinionated, and it made me stop and think of what an amazing job she does getting to the heart of people, not just as manager, but as a friend too.

All in all- it's the heart that matters most!

apple blossom

Whelp, the first weekend of May is here, and so the 86th Annual Apple Blossom Festival is upon us. Grab your finest pink and green outfit, a friend or ten, a stiff drink and get to house hopping along the grand parade route that's sure to last the entire afternoon on Saturday.

If you're not from Winchester, Va, you might be asking yourself what the heck is this girl talking about? Well, quite simply, in a town that thrives on the apple business (the fruit, not technology) this town goes bananas (pun intended) when the apple trees begin blooming. It means the harvest is just around the corner! Yep, this place celebrates the growing of apples and the lovely blooms that appear on the trees this time of year.

Now, please don't get me wrong here folks,  I'm all about this celebration and everything that comes with it. I even said "Happy Apple Blossom" to the lady at the dry cleaners, who replied with the same. And, what red-blooded American doesn't love an excuse to wear bright spring colors, decorate the house in banners and flags, sip cold drinks with friends on a beautiful spring day and watch grown adults get entirely too into the pomp and circumstance of who the Queen will be this year, whose children were selected to be a princess, and just how many social parties they'll attend, again in pink & green to boot.

My dear in-law's lovely home all decked out for the parade

There's the queen and her princesses
Oh, and let's not forget the B-list celebs that come to town to be the Grand Marshal? Val Kilmer 2010...yep, there he is in a tweed coat in 75 degree weather.

Oh yeah, and Mario Lopez joined in the fun last year!

Don't miss reading Lauryn's, pictured above, first-hand account of the festival, from princess to emcee, Lauryn's done it all. It's in her blood!

In short, this weekend is the biggest of the year in our fair town. My office is even closing tomorrow at 1 PM so everyone can get home in time for the Firefighters' Parade. That leads me to confess to you all that I am thoroughly excited that Jep and Jessica, from Duck Dynasty, will be grand marshals of that parade tomorrow night. Check out all the celebs coming to town this weekend!

Don't you worry, I'll share a TON of pictures and regale you all with pictures from this weekend's festivities. In the meantime, be sure to keep up with all the mayhem on my Instagram!
